Bayville Man Charged In Stabbing

Berkeley Township, NJ – Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato and Berkeley Township Police Chief Karin DiMichele today announced details of an altercation and subsequent stabbing in Bayville yesterday evening.

On May 15, 2014, at approximately 8:14 pm, the Berkeley Township Police Department received a 911 call reporting that an individual was in need of medical assistance at 34 Frederick Drive in Bayville.  The arriving officers found Frederick Bonkowski, 21, of Bayville lying on the steps in front of the apartment suffering from multiple stab wounds.  A second individual, Alen Mathews, 58, of Bayville, was found in front of the residence suffering from a stab wound to his right thigh and pointer finger.  The responding officers immediately rendered medical assistance to the two men.  Bonkowski was transported to Jersey Shore Medical center in Neptune for emergency surgery.  Mathews was transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River.

Due to the severity of Bonkowski’s injuries, Berkeley Township Police notified the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office to respond.  The initial investigation found cause to file charges against Mathews for Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.  Bail was set at $100,000 cash.

The Berkeley Township Police Department and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit are continuing the investigation.  Berkeley Township Police Chief Karin DiMichele wants residents to know that there is no need for alarm.  This assault was an isolated event between two individuals known to each other.

The media and the public are reminded that criminal charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
