Defendant Arrested with Aggravated Assault on Infant

Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato and Lakewood Police Chief Robert C. Lawson today announced the arrest of Lakim Cohen, 22, of Lakewood. Cohen is charged with Aggravated Assault and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

On Monday, December 1, 2014, Lakim Cohen was arrested as the result of an extensive cooperative investigation which began on November 16, 2014, when a female infant, four (4) months of age, was admitted to Jersey Shore Medical Center with a depressed skull fracture and 3 broken bones in her right arm. On November 18, 2014, a medical report revealed that the injuries were suffered as the result of blunt force trauma consistent with child abuse. All individuals charged with the care of the child were investigated with regard to the child’s injuries by Lakewood PO Steven Kelusak and Ocean County Prosecutor’s Special Victims Unit Det. Melissa Matthews, with the assistance of Det. Sgt. Terrance Tenant of the New Jersey State Police and Det. Sgt. Eric Skieczius of the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department CSI.

Their subsequent investigation led to Assistant Prosecutor Christine Lento approving the charges of Aggravated Assault and Endangering the Welfare of a Child against Cohen. Bail was set by the Honorable Rochelle Gizinski JSC at $150,000 with no 10% option. Cohen was remanded to the Ocean County Jail in lieu of bail. A no victim contact order was implemented. The Division of Child Protective Services was notified as to the status of the investigation.

The media and the public are reminded that criminal charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
