EXPLOSION IN SEASIDE HEIGHTS

Seaside Heights, New Jersey – Today at 10:10 am there was an explosion and fire at 223 Sumner Avenue in Seaside Heights. Local fire units responded, quickly extinguished the flames and the Seaside Heights Police Department, Ocean County Prosecutors Office Arson Unit, Ocean County Sheriff’s Department CSI and Ocean County Fire Marshall’s Office immediately began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the event.

In the residence at the time of the explosion were a female renter, 26, renter occupying the second floor apartment and a worker doing renovations to a first floor apartment. The worker was uninjured in the blast. The female renter was transported to Toms River Community Hospital and treated for minor injuries and burns.

The preliminary investigation has found that the explosion and fire was related to a natural gas leak emanating from inside the structure. The leak and accompanying ignition source is yet to be determined. Damaged to the structure has rendered it uninhabitable. The investigation continues.
