Granddaughter Charged In Grandmother’s Assault

Brick Township, NJ – At 1129 am Sunday (5/18) Brick Township Police were contacted by Police Dispatch of a call for medical assistance at 93 Courtshire Drive.  Upon their arrival, Officers found Mary Francis Driscol, 94, semi-conscious lying on a bed in her residence.   Ms. Driscol was found by a friend of her granddaughter who called 9-1-1.

Michele Schubert, who is the daughter of Ms. Driscol, stated that she last saw her Mother and daughter, Katherine Schubert, 37, on the afternoon of Friday, May 16, 2014.  Michele Schubert advised that after she returned to her residence in New York State she made multiple telephone calls between Friday (5/16) and Saturday (5/17) in an attempt to contact Ms. Driscol and/or Katherine Schubert with no success.  Michele responded to the residence, at which time she was met by her daughter’s friend.  They entered the apartment to find a highly intoxicated Katherine Schubert sitting in the kitchen and her mother Mary Francis slumped over a bed in her bedroom.

Katherine Schubert was taken to Brick hospital for evaluation.  Mary Francis Driscol was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune with multiple injuries to include a brain bleed, blood shot eyes and multiple bruising and lacerations to the body.

Katherine Schubert was subsequently charged with Aggravated Assault.  Bail was set at $150,000 cash only.  The Brick Township Police Department, Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department are continuing the investigation into the motive for the assault.

The media and the public are reminded that criminal charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
