Plumsted Criminal Mischief/Failed Explosive Device Details

On Saturday, February 25, 2017, at 10:50 am, the Plumsted Police Department was dispatched to 3 Brookwood Drive in Plumsted Township for a suspicious device inside the mailbox. Upon arrival, police observed two (2) cylindrical devices taped to a larger cylindrical device. Plumsted PD requested the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department Bomb dog, CIU, the NJSP Bomb Squad, and the Ocean County Prosecutors Office Arson Unit respond.

The scene was cleared by the NJSP Bomb Squad. An examination of the device by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Arson Unit found the device was a futile effort at destroying the mailbox using two small firecrackers taped to an aerosol spray can. The device did not function.

Interviews were conducted and it’s believed a juvenile may be responsible for the device. Plumsted PD Det. AJ Mantz will continue the investigation locally. There will be no further action by OCPO unless requested.
