Sentencing in Armed Robbery Case

Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato today announced the sentencing of Ansumani Kamara, 22, of Newark, NJ, for the 1st degree crime of Armed Robbery with a firearm.  The Honorable Wendel E. Daniels, P.J.Cr. of the Ocean County Superior Court sentenced the defendant to seven (7) years in New Jersey State Prison.  Additionally, the sentence is subject to the No Early Release Act which means the defendant will have to serve 85% of his sentence before even being considered for parole and will have to serve a 5 year period of parole supervision upon release.  The judge ordered restitution as well along with no victim contact.

Assistant Ocean County Prosecutor Ehsan Chowdhry, who prosecuted the case, sought an eight (8) year sentence.  Defense counsel Ernest A. Ryberg, ESQ. of the Ocean County Public Defender’s Office argued for 5 years.  Kamara has been continuously incarcerated since his arrest on December 27, 2012.

The case stems from an August 2014 guilty plea by Kamara in the December 11, 2012 Borough of South Toms River robbery.  Kamara was subsequently arrested on December 27, 2012 after an investigation by the South Toms River Police Department, the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, with additional assistance from the Toms River Police Department.  The facts of the case indicate that Kamara and an unidentified co-conspirator entered the commercial establishment known as the Hip Heads, pulled out of firearm and used it to threaten the store’s owner and others ultimately robbing them of approximately $4700 worth of cash and merchandise.  Thereafter, the two fled the store with the assistance of two other accomplices.  The second identified defendant of the four suspects was Lamar L. Shell, 24, of East Orange, NJ, who is scheduled for sentencing as a co-conspirator on Friday October 17, 2014 before Judge Daniels.
