United Water and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Urge Residents to Check Identification of Utility Workers

TOMS RIVER, NJ, June 23, 2014 – Due to recent reports of criminal activities,
United Water officials and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office are once again
reminding residents to take extra precaution in protecting themselves and their homes
by closely examining the identification of any person claiming to be from the water
company or any other utility.

According to Jim Mastrokalos, Director of Operations for United Water Toms River, “Our
customers’ safety is our primary concern, and we want to protect them from any harm.
Customers should not hesitate to contact United Water if they have even the slightest doubt
regarding the identity of the person at the door. This is especially important if they have not
called for a service visit.”

“False identification and scams continue to trouble unsuspecting citizens who are
unknowingly being persuaded into letting pretenders into their homes or onto their property,”
said Joseph Coronato, Ocean County Prosecutor. “We also have the largest senior
population in the state, and it is especially critical to continue to raise awareness among this
group.”

United Water employees wear uniforms and I.D. badges with the company name and logo.
The badge also shows the employee’s color photograph, name, job title and date the badge
was issued. Customers can also look for white United Water vehicles, which prominently
feature the Company’s bright green, orange and blue logo.

A customer who has doubts should have the person wait outside of their home. They can call
United Water at 877-565-1456 to verify that the company has sent someone to their home.
They can also contact the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-929-2027, or their local
police department.
