On January 20th 2018, at approximately 2:32 pm, the Berkeley Township Police Department responded to Forest Hills Parkway, just east of the Veterans Park entrance for a cyclist struck in the roadway.

The preliminarily investigation by the Berkeley Township Police Department and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Fatal Accident Investigation Unit found that a 2015 Chrysler Town and Country van, driven by Harold Bennett, 85, of Lanoka Harbor was traveling westbound on Forest Hills Parkway when a bicyclist allegedly turned from the shoulder into the passenger side door of the van.

The bicyclist, a male 76 years of age from Bayville, was transported to Community Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries and was subsequently pronounced deceased at 3:17 pm.

Mr. Bennett remained on scene and exhibited no signs of impairment. He did not have a cell phone at the time of the crash. Additionally, a witness traveling behind Bennett’s vehicle remained on scene and corroborated how the accident took place.
