Special Victims Unit

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office – Special Victims’ Unit, formerly the Sex Crimes/Child Abuse Unit, specializes in the investigation and prosecution of cases involving the sexual abuse of children, the physical abuse of children and the sexual assault of adults.

The unit is staffed with two Assistant Prosecutors, a Lieutenant, a Senior Ranking Detective as well as five additional Detectives, a Victim-Witness Advocate and the coordinator of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (S.A.N.E.) program.

The members of the Special Victims’ Unit are specially trained to conduct and/or assist local law enforcement agencies with sexual assault investigations including but not limited to the crimes of Aggravated Sexual Assault, Sexual Assault, Aggravated Criminal Sexual Contact, Criminal Sexual Contact and Endangering the Welfare of Children.

Additionally, cases in this unit are prosecuted vertically – with the same Prosecutor and Detective from investigation through trial and sentencing – so as to minimize the trauma to the victims and their families.
