ARREST IN BARNEGAT FATAL HIT & RUN

On August 8th at 6:50 pm, members of the Barnegat Police Department and Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office arrested Cassie Hansen, 27, of Barnegat for knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident that resulted in death. The arrest was in connection with a hit and run collision that occurred earlier in the day and resulted in the death of Marie Thorne, 61, of Barnegat.

At approximately 4:00 pm, an anonymous citizen who had seen media reports describing the incident and description of the vehicle being sought, flagged down Ptl. Kyle Cranmer and advised him that he had just seen a vehicle matching the description traveling south on Route 9. Barnegat officers saturated the area in an effort to locate the vehicle. A short time later, Sergeant Jason Carroll located a tan Chevrolet Silverado truck with front passenger side damage in the driveway of a Center Street address.
Members of the Barnegat Police Department and Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office made contact with Hansen at the Center Street address. The resulting investigation culminated in Hansen’s arrest. Hansen was charged with 2nd degree Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident that resulted in death. She was lodged in the Ocean County Jail in default of $150,000 bail with no 10% option.

The Barnegat Police Department gave special thanks to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and Ocean County Sheriff’s Department for their outstanding technical and investigative support and expertise. We would also like to thank the members of the public and media for their invaluable help throughout the investigation.
